Alpha-arbutin, explained

A popular, gentle brightener in Korean serums. What it does for age spots and uneven tone, and how strong the evidence is.

Research growing

What it does

Alpha-arbutin slows down tyrosinase, the enzyme skin uses to make pigment. Over time, that can help soften dark spots and uneven tone.

Why it suits skin over 40

Age spots and patchy tone build up after years of sun. Alpha-arbutin is gentle, so it’s easy to add alongside other actives, and it often appears with niacinamide in Korean serums.

How to use it

What the research shows

A 2021 scientific review found that arbutin reliably reduces pigment production in lab and skin-model studies, but that good clinical trials in people are still limited. Some small studies combine it with other brighteners, which makes its own effect harder to judge.

Our take: alpha-arbutin is a gentle, sensible extra for dark spots, especially in a serum with niacinamide. The research is still growing, and many people find it helps their tone, especially used daily with sunscreen.
