The Actives Edit
Why Korean skincare?
It isn’t about Korean being better than British. It’s about getting proven actives, comfortable textures and great sunscreens for your money.
What Korean skincare does well
Good formulas at fair prices
Korean brands sell to a huge, very skincare-savvy home market, so competition keeps prices down. You can often buy a well-made serum with a useful level of an active for under £20.
Claims backed by approved actives
Korea has a regulated category called “functional cosmetics” (기능성 화장품). To claim brightening, wrinkle improvement or sun protection, a product must use ingredients approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, such as niacinamide for brightening and adenosine for fine lines, or pass its own evaluation. Look for “wrinkle improvement” or “dual-functional” on the box.
Sunscreens you’ll actually wear
Korean sunscreens are known for light, invisible textures that sit well under make-up, and they show a PA rating for UVA protection. Daily sunscreen is the most important anti-ageing step, so a formula you enjoy wearing matters.
Gentle, hydration-first formulas
Korean skincare tends to focus on calming and hydrating the skin and protecting its barrier, with soothing ingredients like centella, panthenol and rice. This suits drier, more sensitive skin after 40.
New ideas, early
Korean brands are quick to try new ingredients, such as PDRN, mugwort and ferments. That’s exciting, but newer often means less research, which is why our guides rate how strong the evidence is.
For example, SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule (from £16.87) and Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum Propolis + Niacinamide (from £12.26) are two popular serums with well-researched ingredients at everyday prices.
The honest bit
UK brands are excellent too
Pharmacy and UK brands offer strong retinoids, well-tested acids, fast delivery and easy returns. The best routine often mixes both.
Not everything is fragrance-free
Some Korean products contain fragrance or essential oils. If your skin is sensitive, check the ingredients list.
Buying from Korea takes longer
Ordering from Korea can be cheaper, but delivery takes longer and, on bigger orders, you may pay import charges. We show delivered prices so you can compare fairly.
Buy from trusted shops
Popular K-beauty products are sometimes faked. Every shop we compare is an established retailer.
Where to start
Start with what has the strongest evidence: a daily sunscreen, a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and one treatment serum. Read our actives guides to see what each ingredient does and how strong the research is, or take the routine quiz.
Good to know
Is Korean skincare better than UK skincare?
Not across the board. Korean skincare is often better value, with pleasant textures, strong sunscreens and gentle formulas. UK brands are excellent for strong retinoids and well-tested acids. Many people use both.
Why is Korean skincare cheaper?
Strong competition in a large home market keeps prices low, and many brands sell direct online. Buying from Korea can be cheaper still, but allow for delivery time and costs.
What does “functional cosmetic” mean on Korean skincare?
It is a Korean regulated category. Products claiming brightening, wrinkle improvement or UV protection must use ingredients approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, or pass its own evaluation.
