Collagen, explained
Collagen creams hydrate but can’t add collagen to your skin, and the evidence for collagen drinks is weaker than the marketing suggests. Here’s what actually helps.
Why collagen matters after 40
Collagen is the protein that gives skin its firmness and bounce. Your skin makes less of it every year from your mid-20s, and the drop speeds up around menopause. Sun exposure breaks down what’s left. That’s why “collagen” is on so many labels aimed at women over 40.
Collagen in creams and serums
The collagen molecule is far too large to pass through the skin’s outer layer, so a collagen cream can’t top up the collagen in your skin.
What it does do is sit on the surface and hold water. That gives a softer, plumper look while the product is on. It’s a pleasant moisturiser, not a collagen treatment.
If you see “collagen” on a K-beauty cream, read it as “hydrating” and judge the product by its other ingredients. “Vegan collagen” products, like AXIS-Y’s Vegan Collagen Eye Serum or Abib’s collagen eye patches, contain no animal collagen at all. They use plant-based ingredients chosen to hydrate in a similar way.
Collagen drinks and supplements
When you swallow collagen, digestion breaks it into small pieces called peptides and amino acids. The theory is that some of these reach the skin and signal it to make more collagen. The research is genuinely split.
An analysis of 26 trials with 1,721 people found that collagen supplements improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with a placebo.
Nutrients, 2023 [1]
An analysis of 23 trials found the same overall benefit. But when it looked only at studies not funded by the collagen industry, or only at the highest-quality studies, the benefit disappeared.
American Journal of Medicine, 2025 [2]
Collagen manufacturers have disputed the 2025 analysis, so the debate isn’t settled [3].
What reliably supports your own collagen
- Daily sunscreen: UV is the biggest cause of collagen breakdown, which makes SPF the most proven anti-ageing step there is.
- Retinal and retinol: encourage skin to make new collagen. Start slowly, as they can irritate.
- Vitamin C: your skin needs it to build collagen, and it adds antioxidant protection.
- Peptides: small chains that may signal collagen production. Gentler than retinoids, though the evidence is lighter.
Collagen products are still lovely for hydration. The medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask, a 2026 Stylevana award winner, pairs collagen with ceramides and adenosine, which do more of the work.
